DST bird Temperature and light logger

The DST bird is an extremely small data logger (archival tag) that measures and records temperature and light levels. Recorded data is stored in the logger‘s internal memory with a real time clock reference for each measurement.

For activating the tag it is connected to the communication board which serves as an interface between the logger and a PC computer.

In the SeaStar software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder. Up to seven different intervals can be set for the same measurement sequence. This is especially useful when more frequent measurements are needed at a certain time period.

With default programming temperature and light are recorded as pairs. Optionally, they can be set as primary and secondary parameters with different sampling intervals. That way memory partitioning can be customized according to individual preferences.

After recovering the DST recorded data is uploaded in the supporting software where results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form. After retrieving the data, the DST can be re-programmed and reused as long as the battery lasts.

A set of Communication Box and SeaStar software needs to be purchased with the first order.

Applications
DST bird is designed as the world's smallest archival tag for tagging birds to collect information on bird migration. The very small and lightweight tag opens up new possibilities for bird scientists to tag smaller birds that little migration information exist on. With large amount of temperature and light datapoints from tags, the scientist is able to analyse bird migration route with approximate geolocation (latitude and longitude) at given dates and times by comparing data from tags to existing and accessable weather data collected by authorities.

The DST bird is suitable for use within e.g.:
  • Bird tagging (external use only)
  • Any other field where temperature and light recording is required
