A non-statistical NOVO-SHADE instrument without memory, statistical functions or computer interface facilities is available if these features are not required.

• The test surface is illuminated from a 45° angle. The intensity of scattered light at the perpendicular (i.e. 0°) is measured.
  
• Data is recorded on a grey scale where black is 0% and white is 100%. Only shading is measured, irrespective of colour, and is referred to as whiteness.
  
• Hiding power determination according to ISO 2814 involves measuring whiteness of a known film of test material on both a black (<5%) and a white (>75%; <85%) substrate. The ratio of these two readings gives the hiding power measurement.
