| SAR-830 Series |
| MODEL SAR-830 - VOLUME-CYCLE VENTILATOR |
| Reliable, versatile rodent ventilator |
| Features |
| • Dependable, all-electronic ventilator • Wide tidal volume and rate range • Mice to Guinea pig size • Expandable to larger animals • Economical multiple-animal setups • Safe with oxygen and anesthesia |
| The SAR-830 is a volume-cycled, positive-pressure ventilator.
The standard model is suitable for use with rodents and similar size animals.
A special version (Option 041) is set up particularly for mice and similar
very small animals. To produce tidal volumes, a constant airflow is gated
into the animal during inspiration. This FLOW RATE multiplied by the INSPIRATORY
TIME gives the tidal volume. RESPIRATORY RATE is set independently, and shown on a digital meter. This approach provides extraordinary flexibility a wide range of volumes, breaths-per-minute, and I/E ratios are possible with no hardware changes, and using just three front-panel controls. The quiet internal solenoid valves and airpump (Model SAR-830/A) are the only moving parts, which contribute to the long service life and excellent reliability of these units. |
| Operation |
Setting up and operating the SAR-830
is easy. First, select an appropriate respiratory rate for the animal,
and dial it in using the rate meter. Next, determine a tidal volume. Finally,
select a flow rate and inspiratory time to deliver that volume. Tidal
volume vs. weight tables are provided to help in the selection of suitable
parameters. Sighs can be produced manually at any time, and a HOLD switch
temporarily suspends inspiration. |
| Expandability |
| All SAR-830 series ventilators are easily expandable to ventilate larger animals, or several small animals simultaneously. This is accomplished using external valve assemblies plugged into an expansion connector on the rear panel. Each valve assembly requires a metered flow source. The external valves operate synchronously with the internal valves, but tidal volumes are independently set by varying the flow rate to each valve assembly. SAR-830 series ventilators are compatible with oxygen and anesthesia. A source of low-pressure air is required for operation, except for models with an A suffix, which have internal air pumps. Anesthesia systems and a full range of accessories are also available. All models feature switchable 120/240VAC operation. |

| MODEL SAR-830/P VOLUME-PRESSURE VENTILATOR |

| Versatile rodent ventilator with controlled
airway pressure |
| Features |
| Dependable, all-electronic ventilator Pressure or volume-cycled Analog airway pressure signal Wide tidal volume and rate range Mice to Guinea pig size Expandable to larger animals Safe with oxygen and anesthesia |
Model SAR-830/P Small
Animal Ventilator can operate as either a volume or pressure-cycled ventilator.
It is suitable for use with laboratory animals in the mouse to Guinea
pig range of body weights. Tidal volumes are generated by gating a known
airflow into the lungs for a set inspiratory time. Only three controls
RESPIRATORY RATE, INSPIRATORY TIME, and FLOW RATE are necessary
to produce tidal volumes and respiratory rates over a wide range. |
| Operation |
| VOLUME MODE operation
is identical to that of the SAR-830 ventilator, but the SAR-830/P can
also operate in PRESSURE mode. A built-in solid-state transducer monitors
airway pressure. The operator simply dials in the desired end-inspiratory
pressure. During inspiration, airflow is introduced into the lungs until
this pressure is reached, at which point inspiration is terminated. This
mode is especially useful for very small animals, where hyperinflation
of the lungs can be a problem. An output voltage corresponding to airway
pressure is provided for external monitoring or recording. PRESSURE or
VOLUME mode is selected with a single switch. The SAR-830/P requires a pressurized air or gas source for operation. This can be any suitable breathing gas within the required pressure range, or the output from an anesthesia machine. The ventilator is also available with an internal airpump (Model SAR-830/AP) for completely self-contained operation. All models are compatible with inhalation anesthetics and oxygen. Complete anesthesia setups are also available. |
| Expandable |
These units can easily be expanded
to ventilate larger animals, or multiple small animals simultaneously
by adding external valve assemblies. A metered flow source is required
for each external valve assembly. These valves are available for animals
ranging from mice to large dogs in size. Please refer to the accessories
list for details. |
| SAR-830 SERIES VENTILATOR ACCESSORIES | |
| External Valve Assemblies | |
External valve
assemblies are used to expand the volume range of SAR-830 series ventilators,
or to add additional ventilator stations. The valve assembly connects
to the ventilator through a supplied 12 cable, and acts as a slave
to the SAR-830. The CTP-VA-1 (shown at right) is equivalent to the standard
SAR-830 internal valves, and is used to create one or more additional
ventilator stations. To connect more than one valve assembly, an MVA-4
electrical adapter is required (see below). A controlled flow source is
required for each external valve assembly. Tubing and connectors are supplied. |
CTP-VA |
| Flowmeter/Regulators | |
|
A regulated flow source is required
for each external valve assembly attached to an SAR-830. Rotameter-type
flowmeters are available as single units or as four-flowmeter manifolds
(seen at right). The flowmeter manifolds can be used to mix anesthetic
gasses, or as independent flowmeters for multiple valve assemblies. Digital
mass flowmeters are also available where the highest accuracy is required.
A metering valve should be ordered with each digital mass flowmeter. |

| Adapters and Miscellaneous | |
The MVA-4 Multi-Valve
Adapter (shown here) allows up to four external valve assemblies to be
attached to one SAR-830 series ventilator, for a total of five ventilator
stations. Up to four CTP-VA-1 valve assemblies can be powered by one SAR-830
ventilator; two CTP-VA-3s, or one CTP-VA-4, due to power supply
constraints. Other configurations of the SAR-830 and its associated valve
assemblies are available on special order. Complete anesthesia setups,
including Halothane or Isoflurane vaporizers, are also available. |
