Meeting the needs of the paper industry
A new measuring principle and a high compliance plunger provide roll-profiling accuracy and repeatability that was unachievable before now. In addition to this, the PaperSchmidt has an extended lifetime to cope with the heavy demands of the paper industry and dedicated tools, such as pre-defined tolerances that make assessing a profile a simple matter.

 

Paperlink Software
Download, present and edit data measured by the PaperSchmidt in a fast and easy way using any PC. This allows the user to quickly check the roll profile against user defined tolerances. It also allows the user to define roll identifier names for batch testing and download these onto the hammer. All data can be exported to third party applications or printed out.

Exceptional Accuracy and Repeatability
Extensive field testing at manufacturers and converters in Europe and the USA prove that the PaperSchmidt provides profiling accuracy and repeatability to a degree far beyond that of instruments previously used in the paper industry. The PaperSchmidt even surpasses Proceq's own Schmidt Hammer and ParoTester in terms of accuracy and repeatability.
Ease of Use
The PaperSchmidt offers all the tools you need for rapid roll profile assessment. The language independent display provides all key parameters required for assessing a roll profile at a glance. On completing a measurement the key data is instantly available: Mean roll hardness, range (max-min), standard deviation and number of impacts. This "max-min" function is a rapid way to check if the roll hardness profile is within a pre-defined tolerance. Impacts which exceed these limits will 'blink' on the display.
Durability
Roll hardness testing in the paper industry typically puts heavy demands on the usage of rebound hammers. In the past, this has led to high maintenance costs. The sealed construction of the PaperSchmidt and its unique measurement system provide longer periods between servicing requirements far in excess of traditional rebound hammers. Mechanized durability tests have proven the PaperSchmidt to be able to perform in excess of 100’000 impacts without the need for recalibration.
Paperlink Software
The Windows based software Paperlink, developed by Proceq SA, makes it possible to download, present and edit data measured by the PaperSchmidt in a fast and easy way using a PC. This allows the user to quickly check the roll profile against user defined tolerances. It also allows the user to define roll identifier names for batch testing and download these onto the hammer. All data can be exported to third party applications.

 

Applications
The need for Paper Roll Hardnesss Testing
Rolls that are wound too soft typically may go out of round during transport and storage. If this happens it causes irregularities whilst unwinding and the only way to compensate for the effects is to slow down the speed of the unwinding machine leading to a loss in production. Rolls that are wound too tightly can lead for example, to bursts within the roll, corrugations on the surface as the web is stretched too tightly, etc.

These variations are very difficult to detect without the aid of a hardness tester, and if they go undetected, serious problems can result. Above all, “it is typically the variation in hardness across a given roll that relates most directly to such converting issues with soft edges being perhaps the biggest contributor.” (TAPPI T 834 om-07 "Determination of containerboard roll hardness")

How to measure
Measuring the roll hardness profile with PaperSchmidt is a simple, rapid procedure. Each factory has its own procedure, but the general procedure is always the same. Begin at one end of the roll and not too close to the edge. The drawing below shows the minimum distance from the edge and recommended distances between impacts as recommended by TAPPI T834 om-07. To carry out an impact, place the hammer perpendicular to the paper roll. Push the hammer against the surface of the roll at a moderate speed until the impact is triggered. Repeat this procedure to obtain a profile across the entire roll in the CD direction.
