The purpose of scratch resistance tests is to determine the resistance of coating materials or lacquers to scratch effects on the surface. In the Wolff-Wilborn tester twenty 9B to 9H pencil (ISO 15184 / BS 3900 - E19) are used, each being positioned on the surface at a pressure and at a predetermined angle.
The hardness of the pencil which damages the surface serves as a measure of the hardness by scratching, e.g. 3H hardness. Meets ASTM D3363 and ISO 15184.
